ESEA Invite TF2 Playoff Predictions

Grand Finals
vs.
#1 Evil Geniuses Link #3 Loaded
It all comes down to this. Loaded barely survived a massive comeback against 20ID in the lower finals to earn a chance against the team whose played the best TF2 all season long, EG. Thanks to the addition of Adam "Reptile_" Dopko to the lineup, EG looks like true champions, but they'll have a stiff test ahead of them. They only need to win one of two maps to take their first ever title after season of attempts, but the map list will not play to their favor. The first offering is cp_badlands, not traditionally one of EG's better battlegrounds, and in recent seasons, Loaded has completely owned the tie breaker of cp_gravelpit. Scouts can control the flow of play on badlands, and, while their current pair of CyZeR and sycknesS are probably the best EG's ever had, it's always a challenge against Loaded's Carnage and Enigma. Expect this match to be a long and drawn out affair as neither team will give ground easily; both will be well prepared for this game. EG's Badlands woes should become a thing of the past after this, as they have the more balanced lineup and better team chemistry at this point. Still, all it takes is a bad half from one player (as shown in the 20ID vs. Loaded lower bracket final) or someone playing out of their mind to tip the tables at this level. If this game goes into the second map, Loaded should have a decisive advantage, so EG will need to stay focused and not let this get by them. If they do, we should see a new TF2 champion yet again.
EG > Loaded - 5 - 3

Lower Finals
vs.
#2 20ID Link #3 Loaded
This match looks like it'll be a story of who is the least dysfunctional. 20ID looked awful against EG last week, but Loaded didn't play much better when measured by their usual standards, barely toppling Strickland Propane. Admittedly, cp_yukon isn't the best map for either team, so we can only hope they look better this week on cp_badlands. Considering the map, 20ID should have a slight advantage as Loaded has performed poorly on cp_badlands all season long, even if that seems contrary to their scout-reliant play. Loaded needs to figure out how to better utilize their combo on before they become successful on the map, and with Seagull in the opposing lineup, 20ID won't have the same problem. As long as 20ID doesn't implode on themselves, they should be able to take this one, but their recent play seems to indicate they'll struggle if they get off to a bad start. This match has the potential to go anywhere: if one team opens strong, they could roll off a sweep, but it could just as easily be a gritty battle all the way through. If I had to put money on it, I think this match will be short and sweet, even if in reality it could've gone the other way much easier than the scoreline indicates.
20ID > Loaded - 5 - 1

Upper Round 2
vs.
#1 Evil Geniuses Link #2 20ID
The defending champions meet the top seed in the first match in history that will truly expose what cp_yukon has to bring to the table as a high level competitive map. Will the chokepoints cause massive stalemates? Will the updated midpoint reveal an interesting mix of tactical variations? Both teams will be working hard to exploit anything they can find in a relatively unexplored competitive landscape, and that's something to stress: the work. This is not the 20ID team that blew off most of the regular season. They are not taking anything for granted during the playoffs, and they're putting in the practice time to succeed. That begs the next question: is this the same EG team that's failed to win the big game over the course of the past few seasons? With former champions Reptile and SycknesS now in the starting lineup, you'd expect the answer to be a resounding no, and on paper, you'd have to give EG the advantage, too. Each team's skill at the heavy classes ranks at the top of the game, but over the course of the season, EG's scouts have proven to be the more consistent fraggers, and the more consistent pair, for that matter; it's only recently that Scruff has become a 20ID starter for sure. 20ID can mitigate this mismatch if they take advantage of SycknesS' tendency to overextend at times, although the station-to-station tempo of cp_yukon will minimize the number of times this may be possible. In the end, a real prediction is impossible with such a close match on such an unpredictable map, so there's only one thing that can be said for sure: it'll be close.
Evil Geniuses > 20ID - 5 - 4

Lower Round 1
vs.
#3 Loaded Link #4 Strickland Propane
For the first time since the early days of CEVO, a custom map will play part of TF2 playoff competition. For some matches, that may not be much of a big deal, but for any game with the questionably dedicated Loaded it becomes a key part of the match. A quick glance at Loaded's match results shows why: they've lost three of the four games they've played on custom maps this season, with the only win a close 5-3 battle against the first team to quit invite competition, lightningbolt. Loaded's opponent, Strickland Propane, will strike in them about as much fear as the aforementioned dead team, and that will be a double-edged sword. Propane has a bit of talent themselves, but their biggest strength is that they always find time to prepare. If they can come into the match with their heads on straight and a good grasp of cp_yukon, this one could easily go their way. They showed last week they should not be treated like the joke many think they are when whispered in the same breath as the other three playoff contenders when they took two rounds from EG in the opening round. Still, even without preparation, Loaded has enough talent to pull through on a relatively straightforward map like cp_yukon, with one necessary caveat: they need to get six players in the server.
Loaded > Strickland Propane - 5 - 3

Upper Round 1
vs.
#1 Evil Geniuses Link #4 Strickland Propane
Strickland Propane may be a playoff team, but they've struggled all season against the three elite teams in the league, taking eight rounds and losing twenty in matches verse them. On the other hand, all eight of those round wins came against Evil Geniuses. Perhaps Strickland Propane matches up relatively well against EG? Even so, EG has never been strong on cp_badlands, one of their regular season battlefields, and that likely won't translate to the playoffs on cp_granary. Expect Reptile, Destro, and SycknesS to have a field day this week. Strickland will need to neutralize Destro's damage at middle, and if they succeed, or if he has a bad game, as has happened from time to time in important matches throughout EG's history, they'll have a shot. It just won't be a very good one.
Evil Geniuses > Strickland Propane - 5 - 2

Upper Round 1
vs.
#2 20ID Link #3 Loaded
This could be the most anticipated match of the season as 20ID showed up for their late season rendezvous on the wrong day and took the forfeit loss. The last time these two teams actually played Loaded took the win on cp_freight, but it's hard to imagine that result has any bearing on Tuesday's match. Both of these teams mailed it in near the end of the season, evidenced by 20ID's forfeit and Loaded dropping two matches to EG and Vicious-Gaming, but at least one of them has turned it back on in preparation for the postseason. 20ID has looked solid while practicing against teams like EG while Loaded looks to continue relying on their individual skill alone. Granted, they have oodles of said skill, but in the playoffs, with everything on the line, and on a map like cp_granary, that won't be enough. 20ID will play smart enough to take advantage of Carnage's aggressive tendencies and he will largely be neutralized much like in many other important matches on push maps in recent postseasons. That does not preclude a Loaded victory, but it means they'll need to get a massive performance from SoLIDSnaKE to make one a reality. With 20ID gearing up and lead by probably the best player in the game right now, Seagull, the safe money is on them.
20ID > Loaded - 5 - 3
